The Undertones At Play
I think it's fairly safe to say words are designed
Purposefully— not in a way that's labeled blind
To make our souls feel a particular way
To make the whole of our souls boil, melt, or sway
To force planed matters to wane or come to a head
To insight quite dismal feelings of midnight blue
Or intense impressions of scalding crimson red
To produce sentiments of green in any hue
Now, with that being said, words both written and read
Are adopted from various sources, widespread
If we were to dig— to delve— to deep dive into
To do a thorough etymology review
There's simply no possible way we would not find
Words overly poorly attempting to portray
Words that were twelve to twenty-two times redefined
Words that snuck their way to now through an old cliche
Some words are sitting pretty, picture mastermind
Some words are just parts, and some are others, combined
Combined with a line or strung to create a thread
But they carry all meanings even when re-bred
When it comes to a few words, I full-out boycott
I tried hard to use them, but I straight up cannot
I can't convince my mind to turn eye— I can't find
A way to not see them as a gross pile of grey
All I see is each part of the word— well-defined
All I think about are the undertones at play
I feel it's safe to say at the end of the day
There are some words that offer us zero leeway
All our languages were carefully designed
With words that are fashioned or configured to wind
With words that are well-designed to deeply embed
To eat at your soul— to burrow into your head
Words intentioned to stir the entire damned pot
Words with divergent creeds but a related plot
