Waiting

Days that seemed to go on forever, and times when you couldn't find someone to talk to. Come up with a tale to go along
with it.
I don’t know what I was thinking. Yes, it’s my birthday, a big one too. I will turn 50 at exactly 3:42 pm today. It’s 10:30 am now.
I got mom’s card yesterday. The card was really nice, with a beautiful note inside that made my eyes tear. Mom’s also making dinner for me on Sunday, and I just know, at least I hope, she’ll make her miracle whip chocolate cake! My daughter, Karen, is going too. She sent me a Happy Birthday emoji this morning and then she’ll call me after she gets off work around 5pm. She wanted me to meet her downtown to go to dinner tonight but I really don’t like driving downtown in the heavy traffic.
I’ll be going out with my best friend, Linda, on Friday night. We always take each other out for our birthdays. Last year I picked a fabulous fondue restaurant and the chocolate fountain was mind blowing! This Friday it’ll be Italian.
It’s 6:15 pm and I just got off the phone with Karen. It was a really sweet conversation. Can’t wait til Sunday.
It’s 7:30 now and I guess I’ll heat up the leftovers from last night when I went out with Bernie, my sister in law. We love this Polish restaurant about 20 minutes away from her apartment. I picked her up. Bernie is 10 years older than I am and she doesn’t see well at night.
It’s 8:30 pm now. I’m reading through the cards again that I got from family, friends and co-workers throughout the week. Also checking through some texts on my phone and emails on my computer. My older brother had a birthday two days ago! He’s now 51 and I called him to sing “Happy Birthday, to you!”. He sent me a very funny GIF to my phone today.
I usually work from 7am til 3:30 pm. I hardly ever take the day off for my birthday especially when it happens on a weekday. I avoid signing up for weekends when my special day lands on either Saturday or Sunday. It’s always been a better idea because most people I know are off work on weekends. But I thought it would be great to be off this particular birthday.
It’s just before midnight. I’m really pretty tired now and I have to get up early for work. I haven’t heard from my son for 3 weeks. Thought for sure he’d call or text or something today. But in Iraq, where he’s been deployed for the last year, he’s working 24/7 and the few times he’s been able to call he’s so tired. He doesn’t say so but I here it in his voice. He always says he’s doing okay, but how does okay look in a war zone? I’m always so relieved and happy to hear from him even by letter. Well, I know I’m going to cry again, pray some more and hope I can fall asleep. It’s too late to call Linda or Bernie. Wish I could just to help not feel so alone. I don’t say much at work because then I couldn’t concentrate and would start feeling anxious.
I can’t believe how fast those growing up years went. They don’t seem to do that right now. It’s been hard, but I am so proud of Steven.
I’ll make a few phone calls when I get home after work and in the meantime keep my phone on me just in case.
