What are the disadvantages of getting a career in the STEM fields?
STEM overall is pretty good but it does have its issues. First, for salary positions many companies require longer hours than just a 8–5 job. Fortunately I love doing at all time, so its not as bad many have it.
Some industries are project-based and may have periodic lay-offs. This was more pronounced in the defense and aerospace industries. But often the engineering staff is cut during downturns because a company can limp along with existing products for awhile. Maybe not the brightest idea, unless survival is truly at stake.
Sometimes bean counters will purchase and gut companies. Same effect, short-term profits over long-term growth. But hey, they will be gone before the full effects are felt.
I would say at time the work is harder, but that is not a disadvantage if you were looking for a challenging career.
