THE KITE RUNNER.
#WritcoStoryPrompt10
The cry was faint but I heard it loud and clear as I walked past the dark bushes. My steps faltered. It was late and I wasn’t sure if it was a smart thing to stop and inspect the source.
Raju parents had been transfered to Dehra.A land of tunnels and hills.Mostly a land of trains.
He was a naughty boy and loved to explore. He was an adventurous boy who was immemsly curious.
He had found a small clearing in the forest situated near his bunglow. His father was an employee of the Government of India and was in the Indian Forest service.
They were rich.Their bunglow had eight independent rooms. The room upstairs were not occupied. They had a help.He was a trusted one.He had a son but his wife was dead. The son was about the age of Raju. His name was Tom.Tom was the opposite of Raju.He rarely talked. He was shy.And liked to spend the day in the garden near the forest under a Bunyan tree. And this Bunyan tree had a legend attatched to it.
Let me tell you about this Bunyan tree.It is a special tree.It was their treasure.Raju and Tom had spent most of their days under this tree.It was like a sacred commitment.A mark of beauty and respect which they had for eachother. The branches of the old tree acted like a swing. They spent most of the time in speculation and awe ,about the strength of the old tree.
The tree has an old story.Underneath this tree Tom and his grandfather sat togther and made Kites. These kites were special. They were shaped and made into desirable forms. These were used for the Baisaki festival and sold for a hefty sum of money. It was here that his grandfather had passed away in his sleep. This incident had deeply immersed inside the mind of Tom.And Tom often visited the spot to have his lunch there squatting below the Bunyan tree in tranquility and peace.
But maybe he was not alone.Sometimes when he sat there he used to hear odd sounds coming from the bushes. And he used to get frightened.
One day Tom had gone to assist his father in the fields. It had been a bad day.The herd of cows had wandered far away from the grazing point. And moreover in the recent past one or two of the cow had gone missing.
It had taken a huge amount of effort to collect the herd back again. And it was soon dark.
Suddenly there was that noise again. It was the same noise he had heard before.Tom was suddenly frightened. But then something was caught in the light of the torch. It was the House Cat.
The next morning had a surprise that was awaiting him.Raju and Tom went to their old spot to have a chat. There in the bushes there was something special that was of their interest. The House cat had given birth to litter of kittens. There were totally six in number. They were very happy with this gift that nature had given them.
But suddenly their hearts went cold. There near the bushes was a mitten which belonged to Tom's grandfather and it was smeared in blood. His grandfather had lost one of his arms in a hustle with a tiger long ago.His left arm had been amputated.
Maybe the Legend of the Man Eating Tiger of Rudraprayag was true.Tom's grandfather was buried under the Bunyan Tree.
