The Case of Oppenheimer: The Philosophy & The Lesson
Every person - Government - community - cites the enemy to justify building a deadly weapon! And once the floodgates are opened, there is no coming back! It gets deadlier and deadlier; there is no stopping that!
We live in an age which, perhaps a hundred years or two down the line, will be considered, in retrospection, as one of the most crucial times of all time! Something like AI, another one of those technologies that hold the potential to make or break our civilization - our species - is yet in its cradle! Following the footsteps of the nuclear arms race, there will soon be, in all probability, an AI arms race, if it has not begun already, and, unfortunately, but for the umpteenth time, history will repeat itself!
Shouldn't a movie like Oppenheimer be more than just entertainment? Shouldn't it act like an alarm of the impending doom that, if we so choose, can still be avoided? It can sound a bit prophetic, but unfortunately for us, even prophets do get it right sometimes!
We got lucky with nuclear weapons! Sanity prevailed at some level and we still have a world! But perhaps it was a mere chance, like the proverbial, and, in this case, coincidentally and ironically, 'a throw of the dice,' and it worked in our favour on that occasion, but there is no guarantee that we will be as lucky with the upcoming challenges as well!
So, should we leave all - the collective destiny of our world - on 'a throw of the dice' once more? It is on us to decide!
Wisdom suggests that important things should not be left on chance alone! But the most important question is: are we wise enough to realise it?
