The Silent Awakening.
#WritcoStoryPrompt71
You woke up feeling great. Your neighbours’ loud dogs weren’t barking and you don’t hear the kids fighting over toys. You proceed to follow your morning routine as usual and go to work. What do you think happened? Create something extraordinary as a story.

It was the silence that woke me. Not the normal clamour of barking dogs or kids fighting over the last donut. No, this morning, the world appeared to be covered in a beautiful blanket of quiet. It felt unsettling, like the silence before a storm or the stillness before an earthquake. But I choose not to question it. Perhaps it was a gift.

I got out of bed, showered, and dressed, appreciating the lack of chaos. Normally, by this point, the neighbor's dogs would have begun their morning duet, and the children across the street would be yelling at each other. However, nothing happened this morning. It was blissful.

On my walk out the door, I observed that the street was quieter. No roaring traffic or blasting horns. Only the soft rustling of foliage and distant chirping of birds. It was almost too silent. I shrugged it off, attributing it to luck, and went to work.

The office was no different. Usually, by the time I arrived, my colleague Rick was singing off-key at his cubicle, and the usual office banter and gossip were circulating. However, today it was silent. There was not a single sound echoing through the halls. I began to worry. Did I miss a memo? Was it a corporate retreat day I had forgotten about?

As I sat down at my desk, I turned on my computer, but the familiar hum of technology was curiously absent. The screen remained blank, refusing to boot up. I tried the phone again, but the line was dead. It seemed as if the entire office had shut down. I stood up to look for someone—anyone—but the place was empty.

I strolled down the halls, inspecting offices and conference rooms but finding no one. The cafeteria was empty, and the security station at the entry was unmanned. It appeared that the entire building had been evacuated, and no one had informed me.

I went outside, expecting to uncover a clue, but the street was just as deserted as the office. The cars were parked, but there were no individuals. The businesses were shuttered, with darkened windows. It was reminiscent of a dystopian film scene in which the protagonist awakens to find everyone gone.

Panic crept in as I hurried through the streets, shouting and calling out, hoping someone would respond. However, the city remained silent. It was just me, alone in a world that had abruptly vanished. I remembered the tranquil morning, free of barking dogs and noisy youngsters. It was everything connected.

When I returned to my flat, the sun was sinking. I sat on my balcony, looking out at the empty city, wondering what had happened. Was it a rapture, an alien abduction, or simply a tragic twist of fate? The silence I had previously welcomed now appeared menacing, full of unsolved questions.

As the first stars rose in the night sky, I realised I might never find out what had happened. The world had gone silent, and I was the only one left to hear it.
