Part 3–Whispers of Time–Chapter 2–Steps

–Wake up! Come on, we're in trouble!

–Hmm? what is it Did the coyotes track us down? God, what time is it?!

–It's morning, you slept soundly. No, I found the gas station, happy?

–How?! The car is too heavy for one person. Don't do that again!

–I'm alive. Plus it didn't take long so don't get impatient..

–Okay, I'm going to fill up. You stay here and better, hide or we will make others suspect.

–Blah, blah, get something to eat.

Tim walked away after fueling the machine to go inside to cash out. At the cash book he took a leaflet with a mountainous area, being sure that it would be useful to them. Back in the driver's seat he handed her a bottle of water, some fruit and a chocolate bar. He studied the leaflet from cover to cover, giving the impression that it was a tourist area, but it looked like more than that. A flash crossed his mind, opening that notebook and flipping through the pages until he stopped at a picture. In the background, among the tall trees was a mansion, and her name was written in the corner. But what was written underneath had disturbed her:
"I would like to see this place again at least once and know that I still belong to it. One day I will come back and maybe I will not see it on the ground, but as a skyscraper.. But now since I destroyed it, I won't stand a chance. Things have taken a different turn.."
Every word read was a mystery. Yet she was aware that those memories were hers. The way the letters were made coincided and didn't shock her at all, more than that she couldn't explain how they got to her. She regretted not revealing anything to him because of her fear. Through the window the trees were closing in, swallowing them up, protecting them from the little monsters that lived there. Park the car in a parking lot, then go up to that mansion.

–I was spending quite a lot of time here. We camp every summer, set up our tents. I was lucky there were no bears.

–Are there bears around here?! She exclaimed fearfully, but she realized he was teasing her.

–As far as I know, no.

–Huh! Because I was giving you to him, haha.

–Let you see who is the bear here! Roar!

–Bear! Bear! She screamed at the top of her lungs and climbed a tree.

–What the? Am I really that scary? Oh, woe is me..!

From the mouth of the bear flowed a ball on the head of its prey, waking it to reality. Mey in the tree started making noise with the intention of scaring off the predator. Tim, in turn, executed the same move. The tree bent to one side, cracking and crashing to the ground. The bear spooked away and they took a breather, scanning the area with small, cautious steps. Somewhere ahead they detected smoke, probably from a campfire or campsite. They made their way to that point, discovering a few cabins and a fire in the middle. People were sitting on logs, holding marshmallow sticks and some were bringing firewood. The atmosphere was peaceful, so they approached, asking if anyone knew Ethan. Their response was silence until a familiar face appeared in the landscape. She invited them to one of the cabins, offering them something to drink. Mey studied her from head to toe, realizing she knew who was in front of her. She hugged Caroline with all her might, remembering that she had no idea what had happened to her that day. The disappearance has raised many question marks and exclamation points without abating. She wouldn't have imagined it alive if you'd stayed to think about the caretakers. In the end, the story was that her actions led the caretakers to adopt her as she had wanted. If they didn't want her to burn them alive. They laughed together at what had happened, rejoicing that they were whole and unharmed. There was still a trace of jealousy left in her, unyielding to anything. Even so, she understood that it would not benefit her, it would blacken her soul more. Let go of the past and any misunderstandings created in her head, when in fact they were just childhood. She scribbled his address on a piece of paper, shattering his dark thoughts at least for the sake of good times. Despite all the risks, they did not back down and took her from the place, thanking her for her kindness. They continued their journey, feeling that they are more and more sure that they will get where they need to be. In the back seat she took out the notebook again, wanting to know the missing parts. When she first walked into the orphanage, nothing seemed clear, nothing connected, it was as if she had traveled back in time. The past events had been hidden from her, and then step by step they hit her with reality.
The picture from him, now the notebook, the nightmares depicted a world. He didn't know her, but if she was ever there and lived, she must unravel the tangled thread
