The watchers

From somewhere out there in the dark of space,
far beyond the orbits of the furthest planets,
they watch us. Who they are I do not know,
but I sense their presence.
They care not that we survive our ignorance,
this desire we have to push a button
that will result in our termination.
They observe how small we are,
a tiny planet circling a mediocre star
on an insignificant arm of our galaxy;
they laugh at our arrogance.
We are so small, there is nowhere
to go, our delusions make us think
somehow we’ll survive this dilemma we’re in,
but those aliens only laugh the harder;
they’ve seen this all before and they know
from past experience they soon will see
another planetary catastrophe.
