Puppies
#WritcoStoryPrompt2
A wet leaf fell on her shoulder making her jump in fear. Startled she shifted from her hiding place behind the bush, wondering if the beast had gone.
A few hours earlier the girl had been frolicking in the countryside when she heard a growl behind her. She ran to a bush and hid like a statue for several hours, until the leaf startled her, for she was imagining each mundane thing as a beast by then.

She looked around expecting to come face to face with a monster, but to her surprise, she saw a miniature poodle cowering beneath a tree, with tears in its eyes. The dog growled again upon seeing the girl, but made no movement to bite her for it was too exhausted.

The girl walked closer and bent down to pet the dog, who immediately stopped growling as soon as it felt a sense of comfort. It was only then that she noticed a small cotton bag sealed shut with a rope behind the poodle. She opened it gently to find five puppies in a terrible state, for they had been deprived of sustenance for a while. A tear slid down her cheek as she understood that someone out there had been cruel enough to place these innocent creatures in such a position.

"Lucy? Lucy!" she heard a few voices faintly in the distance, getting closer with each exclamation. It was the voice of her parents who had left everything behind as soon as they realised she had been gone too long, and came in search for her.

As soon as they saw her cowering beneath the trees they ran up to her in a panicked state, only to find her desperately trying to make the puppies latch onto their mother.

Surprisingly, the mother poodle started jumping with joy as soon as she spotted Lucy's parents, rather than growling. "Luna?" they exclaimed. As soon as she heard the name, her barks grew more joyful and playful. Lucy's parents seemed delighted at this reaction.

"Lucy I've told you about Luna, she used to live with us before you were born but one day she ran away and we never found her again. And I see she has her own little puppies too now! You brought her and her new family back to us my darling!"
